The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2008 The Watershed Institute Grant Program, which was made possible by funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. These grant awards aim to strengthen the capacity and programmatic capabilities of organizations working to protect environmental resources in their communities. Below is a map indicating the locations of the grantees, followed by an alphabetical listing of the ten groups who received funding through the 2008 grant cycle.


Bergen Save The Watershed Action Network (Bergen SWAN)     $11,000
"4 Towns Stewardship"
Through this project, Bergen SWAN will host roundtable forums with 4 towns to explore best management practices, such as rain gardens, and share ideas for addressing nonpoint source pollution, flooding, and erosion. In addition, they will select sites for various best management practices and design and install four demonstration projects. These demonstration projects will be included in a watershed-wide ecotour. Bergen SWAN plans to create and distribute stewardship information packets for residents as well.


Great Swamp Watershed Association      $7,020
"Citizen Advocacy Program"
This project will build upon Great Swamp Watershed Association's 2007 grant, under which they conducted programs for residents of 2 towns on becoming effective advocates for environmentally responsible land use practices at the local level. Great Swamp Watershed Association will evaluate the pilot program, make any modifications needed, and expand the program to 3 additional towns.


Great Swamp Watershed Association      $12,960
"Silver Brook Subwatershed Restoration Plan"
The Great Swamp Watershed Association will conduct an in-depth evaluation of the Silver Brook Subwatershed and develop a restoration plan identifying strategies to improve stream flow, water quality, and habitat.


Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc.     $7,000
"Presenting an informative seminar on the Category 1 ruling and stormwater management in towns with C1 waterways"
Under their 2007 grant, Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc. held 2 public forums on Category 1 waters and stormwater management, for which they received the 2008 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award for Clean & Plentiful Water. This project will expand on those forums by working one on one with municipalities affected by the Category 1 designations.


Musconetcong Watershed Association      $5,000
"Camp Musky: Establishing a MWA Summer Day Camp Program"
The Musconetcong Watershed Association will explore the feasibility of developing a summer camp. They will survey local residents to determine interest in, and need for, the camp; research existing summer camps as examples; and incorporate survey results to design a camp program tailored to the Musconetcong Watershed.


Pequannock River Coalition      $10,370
"PRC Organizational Enhancement Drive"
Through this project, the Pequannock River Coalition will work to enhance its relationship with the Borough of Butler. A targeted membership mailing will be sent to Butler residents and a natural resource inventory will be developed for the Borough.

Raritan Baykeeper, Inc.      $8,300
"Raritan River Access Point Guide"
Raritan Baykeeper, Inc. will develop and distribute a recreational paddling guide for the lower Raritan River. The guide will detail access points, maps, environmental features, and additional information of interest to paddlers.

Shark River Cleanup Coalition      $2,875
"New Brochure Project"
Through this project, the Shark River Cleanup Coalition will develop a brochure distribution plan and update, print, and distribute an organizational brochure.

South Branch Watershed Association      $10,000
"Biological Monitoring Program"
This grant will provide general support for South Branch Watershed Association's biological monitoring program as they work to expand the program to 2 new monitoring sites.

South Jersey Land & Water Trust      $2,565
"Raising the Visibility of the South Jersey Land & Water Trust"
Through this project, the South Jersey Land & Water Trust will enhance its presence in the community by holding 5 guided nature walks in its Walk in the Woods series.

Teaneck Creek Conservancy      $6,860
"WOW at Teaneck Creek"
The Teaneck Creek Conservancy will hold 2 teacher training workshops- one on the "WOW! The Wonders of Wetlands" curriculum and a second on using the outdoors as a classroom. In addition, activity boxes will be designed for teacher use at Teaneck Creek Park and field trips will be held.
